What is a cyber-attack?

An attempt by hackers to damage or destroy a computer network or system. The motive for hackers can be for financial gain, or just to cause disruption, because they can!

Cyber security will defend against these attacks. It will usually be in the form of anti-virus or firewall software. Some companies offering a security hacking service, where they will actively try to hack your technology to find the holes where the dangerous hackers can enter your system, they can then help you to fill in these holes and ensure you are as safe as possible.

How do I prevent cyber-attacks?

Often, when a company is the victim of a cyber-attack they will have unknowingly let the hacker in, either via previous phishing emails , through obliviously sharing their personal information or by being tricked by the hacker who will impersonate a person of authority in the technology field (maybe Microsoft or your IT support company) and will be given direct access. So, the main consideration around cyber-attacks is common sense.

• Know the signs of a phishing email.
• Understand the ways a hacker could access your personal information from what you post.
• Make sure you trust anybody you give access of your technology to.
